CA School Nutrition Still Top Priority
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KCBS) -- As school budgets are being squeezed, nutrition remains one of California's Superintendent of Public Instruction's top priorities.
Jack O' Connell said statewide, half of all students qualify for free or reduced lunch, with a goal towards healthy eating.
And unhealthy items are being eliminated from cafeterias, as students are being offered more choices, including fruits, vegetable and better snacks.
KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports
"Even if you have a school that's made out of gold, two computers on every desk and a teacher of the year before that classroom," O' Connell said. "If that
student comes to school hungry, malnourished, not in good physical shape, not well-rested, that student's not going to be able to learn to his or her full maximum
potential."
O' Connell is also a proponent of expanding school breakfasts, including a program called "Breakfast in the Classroom."
