Description: If you haven't heard the phrase "zero-waste" yet, you will soon. The State of California has the goal of reducing waste by 75% and schools have a role to play. Industry organizations and school districts are working towards zero waste but using very different pathways. Attendees will hear from two school food service directors not only about how they control the food and packaging waste generated in school cafeterias but also how their efforts extend to the rest of the schools' waste generation. You will also hear from the Carton Council, an industry organization, about the free resources available to help school districts reduce their waste.
Debbi Dodson - Recycling Coordinator
Debbi has worked in the carton recycling industry for over 17 years. For the past 5 years she has been the school recycling coordinator for the Carton Council, helping schools throughout the country reduce their waste and save money. Her personal goal is to have every carton in our school system recycled. Every carton counts.
Billy Reid - Food Service Director
Billy has been the Director of Child Nutrition Services in Salida USD for over 9 years. In April 2013 his department achieved their goal of sending zero waste to the landfill. Billy's goal is to completely eliminate the need for a waste hauler for his school district and to use the financial savings to enhance his nutrition program. In addition to his waste reduction efforts, Billy has received the Gold Award with Distinction from the Healthy US Schools Challenge 7 times.
