Description: The new requirements for wellness policies might seem a little intimidating, but they don't have to be! Discover ways to sustain stakeholder involvement on your wellness council and together work towards a comprehensive approach for student wellness. Learn how to successfully update your policy, engage others, and implement a policy that addresses your community's priorities. This session will showcase a best practice and provide you with an array of resources from California Department of Education and the California Local School Wellness Policy collaborative.
Mike Danzik, MPH, RD - Nutrition Education Consultant

Mike Danzik is a Nutrition Education Consultant and has worked for the California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division for the past 15 years. Mr. Danzik's past projects include:
State-wide marketing and outreach efforts to help increase participation in the USDA school meal programs.
Member of the state team that managed the Linking Education, Activity, and Food (LEAF) grants which were the first to implement the food and beverage standards under California Senate Bill 19.
Co-lead on the state team that provided training and technical assistance in Local School Wellness Policy development and implementation.
Mr. Danzik currently oversees all aspects, including training and technical assistance, of state and federal rules on competitive food and beverage sales, and access to free water on school campuses. He is also part of the state team providing training and technical assistance with the updated USDA school meal pattern. Mr. Danzik earned his Master's in Public Health Nutrition from U.C. Berkeley and is a Registered Dietitian.
Lizett Olivares, MS, RD - Director, Food and Nutrition Services

Lizett has over 13 years of experience working with school-aged children and their families through nutrition education, healthy cooking, nutrition promotion, and developing health advocacy strategies to improve their environment. She was also a leader in developing and implementing effective strategies in school districts across the state that improved eating behaviors in children and adults through her tenure at the Network for a Healthy California.
Currently, Lizett works as one of the OMSD Nutritionists and focuses her efforts on increasing meal participation and student satisfaction with the child nutrition program. Through various communication efforts and partnerships with local organizations, OMSD Nutrition Services is working on changing student and parent perception of school meals. Lizett is also the Wellness Council Chair for her district and was successful in engaging key stakeholders this past school year to revise their district wellness policy. Lizett earned her Master's in Nutrition from Cal Poly Pomona and is also a registered dietitian.
